We understand that it can be difficult to check the blog with everything else going on, but that you do enjoy receiving interesting information from the Beaverton City Library in your inbox. Therefore we have decided to discontinue the blog in favor of a revamped mailing list.

The new list is called 'Seeking the Great Perhaps;' the title is inspired by the main character in John Green's Looking for Alaska, whose goal is to find the 'great perhaps.' With the new list, we aim for 'the great perhaps' with an expanded scope that will include library news as well as short book reviews and other things that relate to teens and tweens locally. The e-mails will be brief and sent on a monthly basis.

How to subscribe:
If you were already signed up for the "Teendom, Tweendom Blog Updates" mailing list, you are signed up for the new list! New subscribers can sign up at http://beavertonlibrary.org/list.aspx.

Thank you for all of your support of the Beaverton City Library's
services for teens & tweens in our community!

"John Green and his Nerdfighters are Upending the Summer Blockbuster Model" - http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702304431104579552173066169420

To celebrate the release of the movie, the BCL is hosting a Sad Film Fest on Tuesday, June 17 at 4 - 6 p.m. for teens in Grades 6-12. We'll be watching classic tearjerker scenes and eating some comfort snacks!
This can be done at both the main library and the Murray-Scholls Branch!

-Patrons can bring non-perishable food items, which will then be donated to the Oregon Food Bank.
-For every food item brought in, $2 in fines will be deducted from their account, with a maximum of $20 deducted per library account. Each item equals $2 of fine amnesty, regardless of the original cost of the item!

We're also offering patrons the opportunity to have fines forgiven for bringing back library items which have been billed to them.

Patrons returning billed items (in good condition) will have the cost of the item, processing, and overdue fines waived!

Collection agency fees cannot be waived.

will be hosting an Oregon Humanities Conversation Project Program entitled,
Toward One Oregon: Bridging Oregon’s Urban and Rural Communities. The
participants who attend the program will engage in a conversation about urban
and rural tensions in Oregon facilitated by Ethan Seltzer, professor of urban
studies and planning at Portland State University and Bruce Weber, professor of
agricultural and resource economics at Oregon State University. This would be a
great opportunity for your students to learn about the cultural, social and
political dynamics that divide our state.

This year's format is the Limerick. Starting this Monday, March 31st, the entry sheet and full guidelines will be available at http://www.beavertonlibrary.org/teens on the events page in PDF format. Paper copies of the forms are also on the way to area teachers, both in the BSD and private schools! The Library Foundation is sponsoring three prizes - $100, $50, and $25 - for the top three winners in middle school (grades 6-8) and high school (grades 9-12) divisions. We are taking entries at the Murray-Scholls Branch and at the Teen Desk at the main library starting on Monday, April 14. The deadline for entries is 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30. If it is easier, teachers and mentors can submit packets of their students' work at one time. Winners will be posted to Facebook and our events page on Friday, May 9. Entrants may submit up to four poems for consideration.
In addition, we are also holding a Teen Poetry Coffeehouse event (complete with coffee and pastries) on Thursday, May 8, 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. in the main library's meeting rooms; the winners will be announced at this event before they are posted on Facebook and the Web! Teens in grades 6-12 are encouraged to bring something to share - it could be a poem, monologue, skit, or the Limerick they entered in April's contest.

Do you have avid readers in your 5th-8th grade classes? Do they like pizza? Maybe they'd like to join BCL's Tween Book Club. All you have to do is read a book, show up, eat pizza and do fun book-themed activities. We meet monthly during the school year and attendees always vote on the next book we read, so the books are member-selected.

Our next meeting is on Wednesday, April 2nd from 4-5pm at the library and we'll be discussing Michael Vey: The Prisoner of Cell 25. No registration is required, new members can just show up. If you have any questions, please let me know!
Thanks,
(Not that we don't do that all the time too!)

This year, we're asking teens in grades 6-12 for feedback on how they use technology for reading and social media. Each survey respondent will be entered in a contest to win Divergent movie posters, and their feedback will help us continue to adapt teen services to the needs of or our own local teens.

Feel free to let your students know of this opportunity. The survey can be found online at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/BKNBGW5 or on paper at the Main Library and the Murray Scholls branch.
March, people can officially start to vote for their favorite Oregon Reader's
Choice Award book.

Please encourage your students and your patrons to vote for their favorite ORCA
book. As long as they have read 2 or more books in any of the 3 divisions, then
they are allowed to vote in that division. Since there were a number of
crossover books, any student who competed in OBOB is eligible to vote in the
ORCA.

People have until March 31st to vote. Please collect the votes
at your school or library. There are paper ballots that you can download from
the ORCA website (http://www.olaweb.org/orca),
or you can create your own. You also could do an electronic ballot, if you
would rather. I have made a Google form for my students to use for voting that
I am willing to share. Google has now changed how they can be shared, so you
cannot easily just use mine. If you want an electronic ballot, which you can
modify to only show some of the divisions, please email me with your Google
account and I can make one for you. (Yes, you have to have a Google account to
use this particular electronic ballot.)

Once you have the votes for your building all tallied, please submit them using
this Google form: http://bit.ly/orca2014 .
Please submit your overall votes by April 4th.

Thank you SO much for promoting reading through the Oregon Reader's Choice
Award. Later in April we will announce the winners, plus the titles for the
2015 ORCA Divisions."Ian, Teen Librarianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13816661505975694994noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7821868297778633986.post-42277859687073864392014-02-21T16:25:00.003-08:002014-02-21T16:26:57.921-08:00Upcoming author visits at the BCL - Claudia Gray and Marissa MeyerThe March to April 2014 Teen Scene events calendar is now available in PDF format
This project from the National WWII Museum documents high school yearbooks 1941-1945 from all over the U.S. It looks like it could be a fun way to teach WWII home front history through primary sources. The Theodore Roosevelt High School (Portland) 1944-45 yearbook is available for viewing. The Cooperative Children's Book Center recently published their statistics on books by and about people of color published in 2013 (and comparison numbers back to 2012). They are not terribly encouraging, but good information to know:
Try Newsela!Maybe you're already using it, but a colleague recently told me about a great online source for news and I had to share. It's called Newsela, and here are a few reasons you might like it:

It's full of current and relevant information. They adapt news stories from a variety of sources (AP, newspapers from around the country).

It's accessible to students with different reading skills. They create different versions of each story at different Lexile levels. So you can adjust a single story to use simpler or more complex grammar and sentence structure.

It's geared toward classrooms. As a teacher, you can make a free account and add your students.

It's Common Core-friendly. It's a great way to get current, engaging non-fiction to your students.

You can play around on the site and read up to 5 articles before signing up. Here's an example, note the blue lexile bar on the right.
The theme this year is the science-related 'Spark a Reaction.' Teens are challenged to create an original piece of art involving the theme to promote summer reading around the county. Teens in grades 6-12 have until February 15 to submit up to two pieces of art for consideration to their local Washington County Library. This is a great opportunity for teen artists to get recognized!

Download a color poster with info
As awards seasons ramp up, I start to look forward to hearing what honored authors will say in their awards-acceptance speeches. I love the chance to get to know the authors I read voraciously just a little bit better. On that note, I was reading a speech given by Rainbow Rowell, author of 2 of my favorite books Eleanor & Park and Fangirl, she won the Bost Globe-Horn Book Fiction Award and said this about writing in her October 4th acceptance speech:

"I think sometimes we think of bravery as being the opposite of fear. But, really, you have to be afraid of something before bravery enters the picture. If you're not afraid of demons, it doesn't take much bravery to face them."

Here's a link to the whole speech if you're interested.
Just had to share. Welcome back from holiday break :)Dawn, Teen Librarianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10027392910542937986noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7821868297778633986.post-7248638260437532462013-12-31T14:24:00.002-08:002013-12-31T14:25:17.649-08:00Article on Beaverton High School's use of social mediaHere's an interesting article about Beaverton High School's embrace of social media:

http://www.statesmanjournal.com/article/20131228/UPDATE/131228006/Beaverton-High-School-brings-savvy-digital-marketing?gcheck=1&nclick_check=1

Creating a student social media team at a school is a great idea, and this made me reflect on how far social media has jumped in such a short time. I remember when you could see Myspace on nearly every screen in the teen room. The other thing I learned from this article - Beaverton High School has a ukulele club!
