College Nights in Oregon are fast approaching! These free events feature free snacks and information on higher ed, including school choice, financial aid, and how to avoid scholarship scams. There will also be a drawing for a $500 scholarship.
Area events will be held at Portland Community College on Thursday, November 7, 5:30 - 8 p.m. and Centennial Park School in Portland on Thursday, November 14 and 6:30 p.m. You can find more information and full event details at http://collegenights.org/index.html.

Foster care & college
It's still financial aid season... and another scholarship/grant has come to my attention! If you have a foster care student in your life who would like to pursue postsecondary education, check out the Chaffee Grant. This is an excellent opportunity for students who may not have the luxury of family support to fall back on!

'Tis the Season...
...to apply for financial aid! Autumn may be the time to submit those college applications and take those SAT/ACT tests, but winter always starts with a rush of questions about financial aid.
The Oregon Student Assistance Commission has released this document that lists what students can generally expect to pay (tuition, books, residence, etc.) to attend colleges in Oregon. FAFSA (Federal Application for Free Student Aid) applications for the Autumn 2010 college-bound folks are available on the federal FAFSA site. Students can also access this amazing scholarship database, also courtesy of the OSAC, which allows them to peruse the wealth of Oregon scholarships that are available. Students can even set filters during the search to limit it to specific interests, type of student, need-based (or not), etc!

Suessville's College Scholarship
Suessville (Random House's online home for all things Dr. Seuss) has announced a $5000 scholarship for college-bound high school seniors. To win the Oh, the Places You'll Go! College Scholarship, seniors are challenged to answer the question, "Thinking about the book, Oh, The Places You’ll Go!, what kinds of opportunities and challenges do you think your education will present in the future?"If you have college-bound seniors in your life, pass the word along! All submissions are due by February 15th, 2010. The winner will be announced by May 1st, 2009.
