Poetry 180

I once had a teacher who read Tom Wayman's poem "Did I Miss Anything?" to each class on the first day of school. What a funny classroom poem!

That's why the start of school always brings to mind the book Poetry 180: A Turning Back to Poetry, edited by former U.S. Poet Laureate Billy Collins. In this compilation, Collins aspired to collect one poem for every day of the school year that would bring language, imagery, and poetry to life. Why let students think that poetry is dull when so much of it can set the heart and mind on fire? One poem a day can bring poetry -- living, vibrant poetry -- back to a student's daily landscape.

If you're interested in using Poetry 180 in your classroom (or just investigating it), you can check out a copy from your local Washington County library. Not feeling up to remembering that book's due date? You can also visit the Poetry 180 website, which provides all of the poems free of charge.
