Local history

Pacific Northwest History is an important curriculum compenent for many middle schoolers and high schoolers, but sometimes it can be hard to find good information outside of the standard Oregon Trail stuff. What to do?

If you are interested in very local history, the Beaverton City Library has a multitude of resources in-house. Our Local History Collection covers Beaverton's development and shenanigans since 1893... a wondeful gift that students are welcome to come explore! The City of Beaverton also has a great synopsis of Beaverton's history posted here.

If you are interested in state history, the Oregon Encyclopedia is a marvelous resource. This online gem is the result of a partnership between Portland State University, the Oregon Council of Teachers of English, and the Oregon Historical Society. Don't forget to check out their "For Teachers" section for lesson ideas and feedback.

If you want to cast your net over the larger Pacific Northwest area, check out History Link. This website covers the history of Washington State, whose development into statehood is closely linked to Oregon all the way back through the days of the Oregon Territory.
