Neil Gaiman on Teen Lit trends

Alas, the Teen Art Show has ended, but it was a huge success! Thanks to everyone who encouraged students to submit their work! Our next big push will be the Teen Winter Reading Program, which will be Saturday, December 17 - Tuesday, January 3. Teens are encouraged to review books that they read during Winter Break and enter them in drawings for random giftcards. There will also be prizes for the best reviews in each genre. Watch this space (or our Web site) for the release of the review slips! Reviews may be submitted at the library using the slips, or via our Web site.

Neil Gaiman was recently on The Simpsons in an episode where Home attempts to write a teen novel ala Twilight. Here's an interesting interview with him to mark the occasion:

He discusses teen lit trends and the explosion of lit for the age group:

'I also know having grown up as a devoted reader that, as a kid, your first exposure to anything, whether it’s a good book or a bad book, whether it’s written with care and love or just tossed off by somebody who really doesn’t care, the truth is that when kids encounter books they bring themselves to them, and the place you find the magic can be anywhere,” he said. “It doesn’t have to be in a great book, it can be in a terrible book.'

It's well worth a read for youth fiction aficionados and fans of Gaiman!
