Welcome back!

Welcome back to another new school year from the Beaverton City Library! We’re fresh off of Teen Summer Reading 2012, during which we had over 1,000 teens finish 15 hours of reading and claim their prizes. Thank you for helping us to promote it at the end of the school year!

As always, we are working hard to improve our outreach efforts and make the library’s services more relevant to you and your students. Please let us know how we can help by calling (503) 350-4001 (feel free to leave voicemail), or e-mailing Dawn (dborgardt@beavertonoregon.gov) or Ian (iduncanson@beavertonoregon.gov). We love to visit classes for booktalks, schedule class visits at the library, and promote our regular events!

Starting on Tuesday, September 11th, we will once again be offering homework help in the teen room for students in grades 6-12. Current schedules can be found at http://beavertonlibrary.org/index.aspx?NID=110. More hours will be added - stay tuned!

Here are some big upcoming events to keep on your radar:

SEPTEMBER

SAT Practice Test – A free SAT practice test will be proctored by Kaplan at the library on Sunday, September 23rd, 12:30 – 4:30 p.m. Students can register by calling 1-800-KAPTEST, or online at http://www.kaptest.com/enroll/SAT/97005/ events.

Tween Craftaround: Back to School Edition – On Tuesday, September 15, 4:00 – 5:00 p.m., tweens in grades 3-7 with or without parents are welcome at the library to celebrate back-to-school fun with crafts, including colorful notebook covers (attendees should bring their own spiral notebooks) and magnetic bookmarks.

OCTOBER

Short Story Contest - Teens in grades 6-12 are challenged to write a short story based on one of these three ideas:

• What if no one ever slept?

• What if there was no such thing as clocks?

• What if there was no music?

Students can submit stories Oct. 1st – 31st for a chance to win $100, $50, or $25, sponsored by the Library Foundation. Entry form and guidelines will be available on the library’s teen events page starting on October 1st, but we’ll send English teachers advance copies earlier to hand out to classes!

NOVEMBER

10th Annual Teen Art Show – We want our 10th Annual Art show to represent student work from every Middle & High school in Beaverton. We’ll be accepting submissions in any medium Nov. 12-14 and the show will run Nov. 15-18th.

New this year:
• Every art show visitor can vote for the People’s Choice Award (winner earns $100 Blick Art Supply gift certificate).

• The school with the most submissions will receive a $50 Blick Art Supply certificate for their art program.
