Letters About Literature Contest Begins

The 2009 Letters about Literature reading and writing contest has officially begun!

The Library of Congress's Center for the Book partners with Target Stores each year to encourage readers in grades 4-12 to write a personal letter to an author, living or deceased, whose works have impacted them in some way. The competition is divided into three levels: grades 4-6, grades 7-8, and grades 9-12. The contest deadline is December 6, 2008, so there is plenty of time! Last year, one of the national prizes was awarded to an Oregon 6th grader. For more information on the contest, including a teacher's guide and examples of previous winners, go to http://www.loc.gov/loc/cfbook/letters/. This is a great opportunity for students to interact with their favorite works!

The Oregon prizes are as follows:

Semi-finalists: $10 bookstore gift card (last year there were 91 semi-finalists)

Honorable Mentions: $250 Oregon College Savings Plan scholarships and $25 bookstore gift cards (last year there were 11 honorable mentions)

Runners-up: $250 Oregon College Savings Plan scholarships and $50 cash (there are always 3 runners-up)

Winners: $500 Oregon College Savings Plan scholarships, $100 cash, $50 Target GiftCard, and their letters move on to the national competition (there are always 3 winners)
