Coming up in April & May - Limerick Contest and Poetry Coffeehouse

April is National Poetry Month, and the BCL's Young Adult Division & Library Foundation are once again celebrating with a poetry contest for teens in grades 6-12. This year's format is the Limerick. Starting this Monday, March 31st, the entry sheet and full guidelines will be available at http://www.beavertonlibrary.org/teens on the events page in PDF format. Paper copies of the forms are also on the way to area teachers, both in the BSD and private schools! The Library Foundation is sponsoring three prizes - $100, $50, and $25 - for the top three winners in middle school (grades 6-8) and high school (grades 9-12) divisions. We are taking entries at the Murray-Scholls Branch and at the Teen Desk at the main library starting on Monday, April 14. The deadline for entries is 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30. If it is easier, teachers and mentors can submit packets of their students' work at one time. Winners will be posted to Facebook and our events page on Friday, May 9. Entrants may submit up to four poems for consideration.
In addition, we are also holding a Teen Poetry Coffeehouse event (complete with coffee and pastries) on Thursday, May 8, 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. in the main library's meeting rooms; the winners will be announced at this event before they are posted on Facebook and the Web! Teens in grades 6-12 are encouraged to bring something to share - it could be a poem, monologue, skit, or the Limerick they entered in April's contest.
