News & Notes!

  • This Tuesday, September 25, 4:00 - 5:00 p.m., tweens in grades 3-7 with or without their parents are invited to the library for Tween Craftaround: Back-To-School Edition! Attendees will celebrate back-to-school with fun crafts, including colorful notebook covers (bring their own spiral notebook) and magnetic bookmarks. No registration is required!
  • Heads-up! We'll be sending out entry forms for October's short story contest this week to area English teachers; keep an eye on your mailbox. We will also have the guidlines posted on the web  Entrants have a chance to win $100, $50, or $25, courtesy of the Beaverton Library Foundation. This year, we're asking teens to write a story using one of these ideas:
    • "What if no one ever slept?"
    • "What if there were no clocks?"
    • "What if there was no music?
  • The Beaverton City Library and the BCL Teen Services Division still have Facebook presences! Feel free to "like" us to keep up on library events and quick book news.
  • Last but not least, there's an interesting debate over at the NPR Web site. Authors and enthusiasts alike took issue with the fact that the recent "100 Best-Ever Teen Novels List" had a surprising dearth of books featuring minority protagonists; only two out of the 100 voted for, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian and The House on Mango Street, to be exact.
